Workshops

BASE organises digital workshops 4 – 6 times per year. Everyone within the centre is invited, and these are generally also open to the public both nationally and internationally. You can find information about the upcoming events here on our website, under “News”, or by registering to our email list (contact Torbjörn Fängström).

The topics for the workshops can be anything within the battery field, either more detailed and research oriented, more general or relating to one of our cross-cutting activities. We have speakers both from within the centre and also internationally invited speakers.

Workshops 2026

2026-04-24: Nordic competence and innovation in the field of LFP battery recycling

Today we gathered researchers and industry stakeholders from across the Nordic countries at Chalmers for an inspiring and highly relevant workshop on LFP battery recycling and handling. With a full room and strong engagement throughout the day, the event clearly demonstrated the momentum and importance of collaboration in this field.
The program combined regulatory perspectives, industrial experiences, and cutting-edge research—from the latest status of the EU Battery Regulation and digital battery passports to practical challenges and opportunities in adapting recycling processes for LFP batteries.
A series of short research presentations highlighted ongoing work on:

Pre-treatment and discharging of LFP batteries
Direct recycling, hydrometallurgical routes, and electrolyte recovery
Black mass processing, material characterization, and process modelling
New concepts turning LFP waste into strategic value

The workshop also offered valuable time for networking over coffee and lunch, enabling open discussions on shared challenges, complementary competences, and future Nordic collaboration.

2025-04-22: Digital Twins in battery technology

This Batteries Sweden session was a strong reminder that the future of batteries will be built together—through close collaboration between industry and academia, openness in data sharing, and a clear focus on practical impact. Several exciting opportunities for digital twin applications in batteries were presented, spanning everything from cell and system level behavior to manufacturing and energy systems. The importance of understanding both micro‑ and macroscale phenomena came up repeatedly, as did the limitations we face today—from data gaps to model transferability. Invited guest was David Howey (Engineering Science, University of Oxford) set the tone by covering physical models and machine learning in batteries, including failure prediction, back‑office systems, solar‑battery integration, heat generation during charging, electrolyte composition, and battery health systems. From an industrial tools perspective, Tommy Zavalis (COMSOL) illustrated how digital twins connect a real space with a virtual space, showcasing examples such as optimizing electric truck batteries, laser‑welding simulation apps integrated into battery manufacturing, and digital twin simulator apps based on lumped battery models. Wendi Guo (Uppsala University) highlighted why battery digital twins matter now, particularly for fast charging and safety. Finally, Shengyu Tao (Chalmers) addressed the role of machine‑learning‑enabled diagnostics in a circular battery economy, reminding us that management tasks, system-level thinking, and data barriers are just as critical as algorithms.

Workshops 2025

2025-01-27: X-ray techniques for battery research, Excillum

The workshop included limited number of seats but also opportunity to attend online. The workshop offered onsite visit in the facilities of Excillum and further featured in-depth discussions on real-time in situ and operando measurement challenges, cutting-edge X-ray imaging technologies, their applications in battery research, strategic resource planning, community engagement for collaborative growth, and forward-looking initiatives to drive innovation and funding. 2025-06-03: Active Materials: Precursors and Upscaling

The seminar featured a range of perspectives on battery materials and recycling innovations. Daniele Marchisio from Politecnico di Torino opened with insights into computational models designed to enhance the production and recycling of battery materials. Tim Nordh from Altris shared the company’s transition from research to industrial scale-up, spotlighting their efforts to bring sustainable battery technologies to market. Anna Motta of Talga Group discussed the role of different anode active materials—including artificial, natural, and recycled graphite—in optimizing battery performance. Finally, Kerstin Forsberg from KTH explored the crystallization of metal carboxylates as precursors for NMC cathodes, underlining the importance of process refinement and material quality. 2025-09-16/17 Spotlight on Battery recycling (onsite and digital)

Thematic area: Methods

The lunch-to-lunch seminar started at Stena Recycling in Halmstad and plant manager Carina Petersson who presented the three-year-old recycling facility and how it is to work in constant change. Further Girma Gebresenbrut, recently joined Stena talked about his journey from a young boy with material scientist interest in Ethiopia to a PhD in Uppsala, to Northvolt and later Halmstad. Björn Hall presented how they worked on the design of the Stena battery recycling plant. Day two at Chalmers continued with Martina presenting hydrometallurgy as a sustainable tool for batteries recycling, Kerstin on crystallization in closed loop battery recycling and Moufida on the direct recycling of end-of life lithium-ion batteries. Both days offered site visits. Online (30+) and in-person limited seats (18 on site Day 1, 22 on site day 2)

2025-10-20: Coating workshop (on-site and digital)

Thematic area: Cells

This workshop was organised at RISE, coordinated by P5 and with both academic and industrial talks. The day began with a lab tour where three groups rotated through the Battery Lab, SAX/WAS/ICP Lab, and Characterization Lab. The afternoon started with a session on wet electrode coatings, featuring talks on slurry mixing, X-ray nano tomography, and microwave heating for battery materials. Session 2 focused on dry electrode processing, covering UHMW-PE and VAMAC elastomers, current manufacturing practices, and future challenges. Session 3 explored solid-state batteries, including hybrid solid electrolytes and inorganic solid electrolytes for high-energy applications. Each session was concluded with group discussions to share insights and address questions. In person limited seats (on site 40 plus 40 online)

2024-03-04: Production - from practice experience to advanced research

The workshop included presentations with different perspectives by invited speakers from academia and industry. Carl-Johan Thell from Quintus and Reza Younesi from NOVO gave presentations with an industrial perspective. Ivana Hasa, University of Warwick and Rares Scurtu, Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Researchgave presentaions with an academic perspective on the workshop topic. Workshops 2023

2023-03-15: Industrial Battery R&D in Sweden

For this workshop we had offered all our industrial partners to give a short talk on battery research done at their company. Around 110 people that registered could listen to presentations from: AB Volvo, ABB, Altris, COMSOL, Graphmatech, Insplorion, Northvolt, Percy Roc, Quintus, Stena Recycling, Talga and Volvo Cars.

2023-06-19: Smart Batteries and Smart Functionalities

The around 70 people that registered got to hear from our academic partners The theme in this workshop was "Smart Batteries and Smart Functionalities" and consisted of two sessions. The first session focused on sensors for batteries and the second session on self-healing battery materials

2023-10-30: Using large scale facilities for battery research

The around 100 people that registered got to hear from our academic partners about how we can make use of large-scale facilities for battery research.

2023-12-14: Structural Batteries and Micro Batteries

The around 60 people that registered got to hear presentations about structural battery research done within the centre as well as a presentation on micro batteries from the invited speaker Min Shen Zhu, TU Chemnitz.

Workshops 2022

2022-11-28 Raw materials for batteries

This time the topic was raw materials for batteries. The around 70 registered people had an opportunity to hear about lithium production in Chile from our international speaker Emilio E. Bunel from Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. We also got to hear from our BASE partner Talga, and our possible future partner Luleå University of Technology.

2022-09-19: AI and digitalization within the battery area

During this workshop that around 60 people registered for we got to hear a great talk by our invited speaker Prof. Alejandro Franco from Université de Picardie Jules Verne about his recent work on "Battery Manufacturing Optimization Through Digitalization and the Metaverse". We also got an update on the work done by a PhD student working at our BASE partner Nortical, Kasper Westman.

2022-05-31: Publishing and patenting in the battery area

The around 70 people that registered got to hear from our academic partners about standardization and what we publish in the battery area, and from our industrial partners about their view on patenting, and had a great discussion about battery literature.

2022-03-17 Batteries: Risks, Toxicology and Chemical Exposure

This topic enticed almost 120 people to register. This workshop focused on different toxicological aspects surrounding batteries, e.g. what to think about during battery manufacturing and dangers in the event of an accident.
