13. Upscaling solid-state Li-battery processes and manufacturing technology

Project description

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries containing solid electrolytes are considered to be safe due to their nonflammability. In addition, solid oxide electrolytes are believed to have a potential advantage over other organic materials in terms of their chemical stability, lithium-ion conductivity and ability to supress dendrite formation thus result in increased life expectancy. All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries with solid oxide electrolytes have therefore attracted significant attention due to these advantages.

Application of lithium-ion batteries such as in electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) requires high-power, high-capacity, long battery life and, finally, the battery technology need to be scalable for large volume manufacturing. To improve the manufacturability of lithium-ion batteries, it is very important to progress the research hand in hand with development of processing and manufacturing technology. The project is accordingly focus on manufacturing methods that are capable of upscaling an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery by a solid-phase fabricating process. Here we foresee a number of scientific and research challenges to be addressed such as minimisation of the interfacial resistance between the electrodes and the solid electrolyte, development of a high throughput solid-phase fabrication processes, sustained electrochemical performance and interfacial resistance of an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery, formation of strong interface with high adhesion and contact between electrodes and electrolytes. These performance metrics are evaluated against scalability and manufacturability.
